Going Green? Not sure what it means?

Are You Going Green With Your Electrical Equipment? To put it into the most extreme measures, “Going Green” means to utilize natural ambient energy sources, such as solar, wind, geothermal and active/passive human power to generate electricity. On the lighter side and less expensive, you can begin to head in the direction of going green by taking simple measure such as upgrading your old and outdated fixtures, appliances, and by replacing your incandescent, normal light bulbs with fluorescent or LED, and switching to energy saving equipment. Perform these few energy saving measures and you will be on your way to making your place as energy efficient as possible.

Tips for Saving Energy

1. Install ceiling fans to cut down costs on air conditioning.
2. Install occupancy sensors to prevent leaving lights on in less used areas.
3. Air dry your laundry instead of using the dryer; ceiling fans can help with this.
4. Hibernate your computer when not in use.
5. Replace your standard light bulbs with fluorescent or LED light bulbs. 
6. Replace your old power strips with power-saving surge protectors.
7. Update your old computers to new, they use less energy.

Typically, improving lighting efficiency involves a trade-off: replacing inexpensive and less-efficient lamps with those that cost more up front, yet are more efficient. In the long run, higher energy efficiency will result in cost savings. In addition, several electric utilities offer cash rebates for purchasing energy efficient lighting.

Using occupancy sensors can reduce energy use by as much as 45 percent. Improving energy efficiency can reduce emissions that contribute to global warming, mercury contamination in lakes, acid rain, and nuclear waste.

For many families, the kitchen is the room in the house where the most energy is consumed. Refrigerators, cookers, ovens, dishwashers and other kitchen appliances can account for nearly 40% of the total energy consumed in some homes. Buying energy efficient appliances, and changing the way kitchen appliances are used on a daily basis can easily make the kitchen a greener place.
